What is City Year?
City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization founded in 1988 that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. In 27 communities across the United States and through two international affiliates, this innovative public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. City Year AmeriCorps members support students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs. “City Year Shines with Cheltenham Super Powers!”
The City Year team at Cheltenham is an inspiring force of 8 AmeriCorps members. Combining their collective strengths in serving the students and families of the Northwest Denver community, members serve full-time in school, beginning with a walking school bus to ensure students get to school safely and on-time, followed by an uplifting morning greeting to start the day off with a surge of positive energy. Throughout the day, City Year AmeriCorps members provide a plethora of services:
- school-wide initiatives focused on increasing student engagement and school culture
- in-class support to assist educators in differentiating instruction, and one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for students who need additional guidance with attendance, behavior, and course performance in literacy and math.
- In addition, AmeriCorps members facilitate after-school programming to extend student learning beyond the traditional school day, offering critical academic support to students via Homework Help.
